Why Do You Need A Youth Minister?

“Six out of ten people say they made their decision to accept Christ before age 18.” (barna.org)  The teenage years are when people form their basic beliefs.  They begin to ask the deep questions and to seek their own personal values instead of relying only on what their parents tell them.  With statistics and facts like these, it is blatantly obvious that ministry to youth is very important.  The time of our lives before we leave home is the most crucial for reaching out with the message of Christ.

We can see that it is important to minister to the youth in our communities, but why is a separate staff person needed just to minister to youth?  Why can’t our current staff minister to our young people?  Well, I would first like to say, you can.  Having a full time youth minister is not a necessity for every church.  But at the same time, there are many reasons for having staff specific to the youth of your church.  Ministering to youth takes a much different approach than ministry to the other people of the church.  Youth have their own culture and have different ways of learning than many of their parents.  The approach to youth ministry usually needs to be different than that of ministry to the adults in the church if you want to have most possible impact in your student ministry.  Because of the importance of reaching teenagers and the need for a different approach of ministry to them, often a youth minister is a great solution.
